50W470 Silicon Steel0.50 mm non-oriented CRNGO, guaranteed P1.5/50 ≤ 4.70 W/kg
50W470 silicon steel is the Chinese GB name for 0.50 mm fully processed non-oriented electrical steel with core loss of no more than 4.70 W/kg at 1.5 T and 50 Hz. The same grade is M470-50A in EN and IEC and 50A470 in JIS. We supply it as master coil, slit coil, sheet or laminations for motor and generator cores, with a mill test certificate for every coil.
What the grade guarantees
50W470 limits, and the ones it does not set
The grade name carries two numbers: 50 for 0.50 mm and 470 for 4.70 W/kg. Everything else on a 50W470 order is either a further guaranteed minimum, a typical value, or something you have to put on the order yourself.
| Parameter | Guaranteed value | Test condition | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal thickness | 0.50 mm | — | Guaranteed, tol. ± 0.02 mm |
| Core loss P1.5/50 | ≤ 4.70 W/kg | 1.5 T, 50 Hz, Epstein | Guaranteed (the grade name) |
| Polarisation J5000 / B50 | ≥ 1.64 T | H = 5,000 A/m | Guaranteed |
| Polarisation J2500 / J10000 | ≥ 1.54 T / ≥ 1.74 T | H = 2,500 / 10,000 A/m | Listed in EN 10106 tables |
| Core loss P1.0/50 | No guaranteed limit | 1.0 T, 50 Hz | Typical only, unless set on the order |
| Core loss at 60 Hz | No guaranteed limit | 1.5 T, 60 Hz | Measured on request |
| Stacking factor | ≥ 0.96 | IEC 60404-13 | Guaranteed for 0.50 mm |
| Density | 7.70 g/cm³ | Conventional value for loss testing | Used to calculate W/kg |
| Grade names | GB/T 2521.1 50W470 · Baosteel B50A470 · IEC 60404-8-4 & EN 10106 M470-50A · JIS C 2552 50A470 | ||
Polarisation and density values follow the EN 10106 grade table for M470-50A. 50W470 is one of the grades on our Standard CRNGO page. If your motor design depends on P1.0/50 or a 60 Hz figure, give it as an order requirement so it is tested and certified, not assumed.
From our certificates
What 50W470 coils measured on past orders
A grade limit tells you the worst case. Mill test certificates from our earlier 0.50 mm orders show where real coils land. For 50W470 we hold two Baosteel B50A470 certificates; values below are the range across both.
| Value | Guaranteed | Measured on our certificates | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core loss P1.5/50 | ≤ 4.70 W/kg | 3.92–4.10 W/kg | 13–17% below the limit |
| Polarisation J5000 | ≥ 1.64 T | 1.69–1.70 T | 0.05–0.06 T above the minimum |
| Core loss P1.0/50 | Not guaranteed | 1.76–1.86 W/kg | About 0.45 × P1.5/50 |
Two coils are a small sample, so read this as a sense of headroom, not a promise for the next coil. What it does show: a 50W470 coil normally arrives well inside its limit, and the P1.0/50 figure sits near 0.45 of the 1.5 T loss. How the Epstein figures on a certificate are produced is covered in core loss testing with the Epstein frame.
Measured is not guaranteed
Why a 50W800 coil that measures 4.5 W/kg is not a 50W470
Non-oriented coils often test far below their grade limit. That tempts buyers to accept a cheaper grade on the strength of one good certificate. Our own certificates show why that is risky.
01
The spread is wide
Eight 50W800 coils on our certificates measured 4.29–4.80 W/kg: some under 4.70, some over.
02
Only the limit binds
A 50W800 coil is guaranteed only to 8.00 W/kg. The next coil can be anywhere up to that.
03
Your motor sees every coil
Loss spread between coils shows up as efficiency spread between motors on the test bench.
04
Order the limit you need
If the design needs 4.70 W/kg, order 50W470. We quote by guaranteed value, not by best certificate.
How the 0.50 mm grades are tiered: Non-oriented grades explained →
Choosing a grade
50W470 against the other 0.50 mm grades
Most 0.50 mm motor steel is bought as one of four grades. Moving to a lower-loss grade buys efficiency but gives up a little induction, because lower-loss grades carry more silicon.
| GB grade | EN / IEC | Guaranteed P1.5/50 | Guaranteed B50 | Measured on our certificates | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50W400 | M400-50A | ≤ 4.00 W/kg | ≥ 1.63 T | 2.75–2.82 W/kg · 1.71 T (5 coils) | Higher-efficiency industrial motors |
| 50W470 | M470-50A | ≤ 4.70 W/kg | ≥ 1.64 T | 3.92–4.10 W/kg · 1.69–1.70 T (2 coils) | Efficiency-rated industrial motors, compressors, generators |
| 50W600 | M600-50A | ≤ 6.00 W/kg | ≥ 1.66 T | No certificate on file | General-purpose motors and generators |
| 50W800 | M800-50A | ≤ 8.00 W/kg | ≥ 1.70 T | 4.29–4.80 W/kg · 1.72–1.74 T (8 coils) | Appliance, fan and pump motors |
The measured column comes from certificates of three Chinese mills, one grade each, so it compares coils rather than mills. Step up to 50W400 when a tighter efficiency class is the target; stay with 50W470 when magnetising current and cost matter as much as loss. For thinner gauges and the full grade list, see Standard CRNGO and our M270-35A page.
Grade equivalents
50W470 has no AISI M-number
The old AISI M-series (M-19, M-27, M-43 and so on) does not line up with 50W470. Drawings from North American designs that say “M-19 or equal” usually mean a much lower-loss steel. Match by guaranteed loss at your thickness, not by the nearest M-number.

FAQ
Buying 50W470 from us
What is 50W470 silicon steel?
50W470 is a Chinese GB/T 2521.1 grade of cold-rolled, fully processed non-oriented electrical steel. It is 0.50 mm thick, with core loss of no more than 4.70 W/kg at 1.5 T and 50 Hz and B50 of at least 1.64 T. It is used for stator and rotor laminations in industrial motors, compressors and generators.
What is the equivalent of 50W470 in EN, IEC and JIS?
M470-50A in EN 10106 and IEC 60404-8-4, and 50A470 in JIS C 2552. Baosteel sells the same grade as B50A470. All of them mean 0.50 mm non-oriented steel with P1.5/50 of no more than 4.70 W/kg. The full cross-reference is on our grade equivalents chart.
Is 50W470 the same as M19 or another AISI M-grade?
No. 50W470 has no direct AISI M-number. M-19 is usually matched to M270-35A, a 0.35 mm grade with far lower loss, and M-43 to M400-50A, which is tighter than 50W470. If your drawing gives an M-grade, send it with the thickness and we quote the GB grade whose guaranteed loss meets it.
What core loss do 50W470 coils actually measure?
On the two Baosteel B50A470 certificates we hold from past orders, P1.5/50 measured 3.92–4.10 W/kg against the 4.70 limit, and J5000 measured 1.69–1.70 T against the 1.64 T minimum. That is a small sample, so treat it as typical headroom, not a guarantee.
Can I use a 50W600 or 50W800 coil if its certificate shows less than 4.70 W/kg?
We advise against it. A 50W800 coil is only guaranteed to 8.00 W/kg, and on our own certificates eight 50W800 coils measured anywhere from 4.29 to 4.80 W/kg. If your motor needs 4.70 W/kg on every coil, order 50W470.
Does 50W470 have a guaranteed P1.0/50 or 60 Hz loss?
Not in the grade standard, which guarantees only P1.5/50. On our certificates P1.0/50 measured 1.76–1.86 W/kg, about 0.45 times the 1.5 T value. If your design depends on P1.0/50 or a 60 Hz figure, name it on the order and we confirm at quotation whether it can be tested and certified.
Which insulation coating does 50W470 come with?
C5 inorganic coating is standard. C6 inorganic-organic coating is available for better punchability, and C3 organic coating on request. Tell us whether the laminations will be welded, bonded or stress-relief annealed and we recommend the coating.
What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?
Coil orders typically start at about 5 t, roughly one coil, and cut-to-length sheet at about 500 kg. Lead time for both is about 15 days. Smaller coil quantities are slit from a full coil and can take a few days longer when the grade is not in stock. For anything below these quantities, tell us the grade, size and quantity and we will do our best to meet it.
Can I get a sample before ordering?
Yes. Samples are usually ready within about a week, so you can test core loss, induction and stampability first. The sample fee covers freight and is refunded against your first bulk order.
